  • UK in focus as Air Mauritius champions non-stop flights from London; new dynamic with Mauritius Tour

Non-stop flights from London Gatwick, a pledge to broaden visitor groups and a strong commitment to regenerative tourism, are ushering in a new chapter for Mauritius , the Indian Ocean’s most enchanting destination.   A global marketing and social media campaign from the national airline, #WeareMauritius,  is now rolling out worldwide.

Last week, senior representatives from Air Mauritius and the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Agency (MTPA) met with hoteliers, travel agents and media in the UK, to present the Island’s evolving tourism strategy.   The new dynamic sees the national airline, which marks 60 years of operations next year, and tourism agency, working in step on a refreshed ‘slow luxury,’  experiential tourism initiative.  At its heart is promoting Mauritius as a compelling destination for wellbeing and sports tourism, including golf, as well as meetings, incentives, conferences & exhibitions (MICE) groups.

“For Destination Mauritius , it is fundamental that the MTPA works closely with our national airline in ensuring a seamless option across various cities for the visitors of our tropical paradise,” commented Dinesh Burrenchobay, Chairman, Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority.

Nestled in the Indian Ocean and long known as one of the world’s most romantic honeymoon destinations, Mauritius also attracts adventurers, solo travellers, families and culture seekers.  While the island can be enjoyed year-round, the peak season is from November to April, while the cooler, dry winter spans from May to October.

World-class welcome for every visitor

Mauritius boasts a variety of accommodation, ranging from boutique guesthouses, private villas and family-friendly beach resorts to iconic world-class five-star luxury resorts.  These include the recently refurbished Four Seasons Mauritius at Anahita, St. Regis Le Mauritius and the One&Only Le Saint Geran.

Getting there has never been easier, no need to transit.    Air Mauritius provides up to five non-stop weekly flights between London Gatwick and SSR International Airport, offering 159,164 seats annually from the UK and connecting the island with key international hubs.  “Gatwick is working very well for us,” acknowledged Air Mauritius Chief Commercial Officer Laurent Recoura, highlighting the wish to  “take the route daily at the earliest opportunity.”

The airline’s fleet currently includes four Airbus A350-900s, two Airbus A330-900neos, two Airbus A330-200s and four ATR72s (three -600’s and a -500). Three additional A350 aircraft are on order, with the first arriving in December 2026.  Business class seating will be enhanced, increasing from 28 to 32 seats to further elevate the passenger experience.

“We are Mauritius .  Everything we do reflects the warmth, authenticity and unique spirit of our island nation. We take great pride in our role as the national carrier.  We may not be the largest airline or serve every destination, but we understand our market deeply. We are proud of the important role we play working alongside MTPA to connect Mauritius to the world.  Our passengers can depend on our cabin crew ambassadors to embody the Mauritian welcome and warm spirit,”  added Laurent Recoura.

Beyond the beach - a living culture

Beyond its coastline, Mauritius offers a rich cultural tapestry, shaped by a harmonious blend of African, Asian and European influences.  The island’s food, festivals, languages and traditions reflect centuries of history and coexistence.

With sports tourism a growing market, Mauritius and neighbouring Rodrigues Island are prime destinations for kitesurfing, golfing, cycling, diving and hiking. World-class spas, wellness retreats, championship golf courses – there are 15 on Mauritius - and water sports facilities are drawing a new generation of tourists to the island.

Regenerative tourism – designed to enhance, not detract

Tourism development is designed to enhance rather than detract from the island’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. Experiences such as cooking classes, artisan workshops, historical tours and live music concerts connect visitors to the island’s distinctive history.

Meanwhile, hospitality partners are also advancing sustainability initiatives, including mangrove and coral reef restoration, water-efficiency measures, marine park preservation and community investment.

The ambition of the new team at the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority is to move beyond neutral sustainability initiatives towards a positive regenerative tourism model involving ecosystems and local communities.

“As an island nation with limited resources, sustainability is not optional - it is essential,” said Dinesh Burrenchobay, Chairman of MTPA.

Air Mauritius and MTPA will exhibit jointly at World Travel Market London this November.  In the meantime, look out for the distinctive Dodo social media campaign – From the Golden Eye to the Golden Hour, a nod to Air Mauritius ’ fly non-stop to London schedule. You can fly from Gatwick at 1600 hrs and arrive at 0700 hrs, ready for a day of adventure, or relaxation.
