Newquay Cornwall Airport develops passenger facilities with ‘Destination Cornwall’ retail outlet

Tuesday 25th August, 2009

A brand new retail area, ‘Destination Cornwall’, has been opened at Newquay Cornwall Airport, offering passengers a range of locally sourced produce. The addition of the retail outlet comes hot on the heels of the opening of the airport’s executive lounge and complements the existing Horizons café area to further enhance the airport experience for departing travellers.

‘Destination Cornwall’ will be managed and run by Skypartners, the aviation catering and retail specialist already responsible for the airport’s Horizons café. Skypartners Managing Director, Marc Bond said: “We are especially pleased to build on our already excellent working relationship with Newquay Cornwall Airport and we’re delighted to be running ‘Destination Cornwall’, which is already proving extremely popular with business travellers and visitors to the region.”

‘Destination Cornwall’ stocks a variety of Cornish specialties, which make ideal gifts and keepsakes. The range includes Cornish wines, beers and ciders; Cornish cakes and biscuits; Cornish jams and Cornish arts and crafts. The shop also stocks an extensive range of fashion lines and gifts as well as books, newspapers, magazines and other travel essentials.

Carolyn Rule, Cornwall Council cabinet member for the economy, said: “We are extremely happy to further underline our commitment to providing an enhanced passenger experience throughout the entire terminal at Newquay. Investment in improvements has now been made in every area of the airport, right through from arrival in the car park to boarding the aircraft. Passengers will really notice the difference now, as we strive to make Newquay a world-class airport.”

Newquay Cornwall Airport was ranked as the fastest growing airport in the UK, during the financial year 2008-2009 and is forecast to see continued growth this year with a route network of 19 destinations, operated by eight airlines. The opening of the executive lounge and ‘Destination Cornwall’ marked the completion of the second stage of development at the airport and is part of continuing plans to increase the capacity of the terminal to meet a throughput of 700,000 passengers a year.

Significant development at the airport has been ongoing for the past two years and Newquay Cornwall Airport now boasts some of the most modern airfield facilities in the country, having already benefited from the construction of a new air traffic control tower, new fire station and appliances, resurfacing of the entire runway, new approach and airfield lighting and more than seven miles of perimeter fencing. A new arrival’s hall was also completed last summer.
