The new Hungarian Post International Exchange was inaugurated near Terminal 2 of Budapest Airport on September 6th. The facility itself was ready in October 2010 but it was reserved for the Hungarian EU-Presidency prior to its inauguration by Hungarian Post. Testimony to the quality of the building is that it served as a temporary Government Lounge for six months. Having completed a series of successful test-runs the facility now forwards airmail to and from Hungary.

The Hungarian Postal Exchange Center comprises 3,200 square meters of storage and sorting and 1.600 square meters offices. It is located near Terminal 2 at Budapest Airport and is linked to the airside of the airport to facilitate the speedy delivery of airmail directly to the aircraft cargo holding bay. All incoming and outgoing mail deliveries are subject to thorough security checks.

Development of the Hungarian Post International Exchange started in 2008 when Budapest Airport launched the BUD Future development programme. The new International Postal Exchange is not only a modern mail handling facility but it also helps Hungarian Post to save operational costs by combining into one site the earlier downtown and airport facilities. Construction works were started by Market Építő Plc. in 2010 and were completed in seven months, on time and within the 4.5 million Euro budget. The new facility was officially inaugurated by Mr. László Geszti, the new CEO of Hungarian Post and Mr. Jost Lammers, CEO of Budapest Airport. The Hungarian Post airport center provides new jobs for 272 people.

René Droese, Property Director of Budapest Airport said: “Hungarian Post is an important partner for us with whom we have signed a 10 year lease agreement. The postal facility fits well into our other major development projects. We are developing an entire Cargo City with all necessary logistics, a state-of-the-art Office Park near Terminal 2, an Airport Business Park on the Southern edge of the airport, an on-site 3-4 star hotel opposite Terminal 2B, relocation of Malév Hungarian Airlines and Wizz Air headquarters to the airport and the construction of a new air cargo logistics facility where two major ground handlers, Celebi and Malév Ground Handling will be relocated. The development plan is worth 300 million Euros. When completed it will create some 10, 000 new jobs at and around the airport'.
