ARINC introduces integrated border security solution, IBICS, at AVSEC World 2009

Monday 9th November, 2009

A comprehensive border security solution that seamlessly integrates boarder control technologies into passenger check-in systems will be introduced by ARINC at AVSEC World 2009, Cape Town, from 10-12 November 2009. The Integrated Border Information and Control Systems (IBICS) will enable high passenger volumes to be processed more quickly and efficiently and enable governments and other stakeholders to apply a comprehensive solution to border management.

IBICS has been developed as a platform delivering an holistic approach to security and border management and is the result of ARINC combining its core Identity Management and Biometric technology, its expertise in networks and Advanced Passenger Information Systems (APIS), and building on its vast aviation and master systems integration experience.

With IBICS, advanced passenger information, document authentication, and biometric and biographic data collection and authentication systems are integrated with check-in, baggage, boarding and other systems involved in passenger processing. Interfaces that collect passenger and biometric data from a self-service check-in kiosk can be created to transmit that data to an airline’s departure control system for delivery to the government agency system.

Further integration enables the data to be verified when the passenger checks baggage, is screened at security, and when he boards the aircraft, either through conventional or self-boarding gates. Because all passenger and baggage information has been transmitted prior to departure, the traveller arrives at his destination and clears Customs and Immigration with ease with incorporation of automated border control gates.

This end-to-end approach produces turnkey solutions that can utilise best-of-breed standards-based components evolve to make use of future technologies and data derived from next-generation passenger processing systems. For example, barcode data from passenger and baggage systems can be used to track passengers and their baggage and assist security personnel in the identification of irregular patterns, such as a passenger travelling on an intercontinental flight without baggage, or checking baggage one way on a round-trip journey.

Ray Batt, Director Government & Security, ARINC EMEA, says, “IBICS brings benefits to all parties. It enables airlines and airports to focus on their respective businesses and Governments can focus more on risk-based intelligence, using API, PNR, and other data collected in advance of actual departure, to identify potential threats, rather than applying broad-brush tactics to all passengers, regardless of their threat risk. Furthermore, the travelling public experiences a safer, hassle-free journey inline with the industry vision to simplify the passenger experience.
